It’s a new year once again, time to get organized and be productive. Time to plan our day at a glance to weeks, months and years.
While some of you might end up writing them in your paper planners, others choose their laptop or phone or iPad to schedule things.
Although we live in an era where everything is becoming digital, I am always a fan of paper planners.
First of all, I never liked the idea of scheduling anything on my phone or laptop. The unexpected notification irritates me so much!!
And the worst of all, I pick up the phone to snooze the to-do list notification and end up checking the Instagram notification thereafter endless scrolling through the feed. Before I know it, two hours have gone by!!!
this is why I hate using digital planners.
For people like me who always end up doing something else than their actual plan, I would always recommend paper planners.
But wait, is that the ONLY reason why you should use a paper planner?
Not at all, I have got some great reasons to convince you to plan your goals and schedule them using a paper planner and why it’s the best productivity tool you should have!
Paper planners help us remember things better
Do you remember how people used to write down every single thing in their calendars to shopping bills in the good old days?
That’s because writing stimulates certain brain cells to increase the focus.
This is one reason why I love writing down almost everything. When you use your hand to form letters it’s more engaging to our brain.
I am pressing the keys of my laptop as I type these sentences out. But you know I don’t really feel my brain does anything at all. It’s just idle.
As a quick experiment I wrote the same sentence on my notebook and guess what, each time I write a letter it’s instantly connected with my brain!
My brain is working hard to stay focused.
Don’t believe it? Try it out for yourself.
Type a random sentence on your computer or phone, next get a paper and pen to write down the same on a piece of paper! What do you think?
Writing down is more organized and intentional
Typing in an app can be messy and less concise. Writing on a planner, on the other hand, is an extra effort and makes it motivating.
Don’t you think it’s super convenient having all your goals in one place? When you see your days and weeks in one notebook makes it crystal clear and it’s super easy to know what you did that day!
Paper planners motivate us to be tech-free
When it comes to paper planners you can use them anywhere! In a cafe, in your car, even in a park or forest. You are basically away from access to technology. It helps you to find more ME time. Often when we scroll the social media we are more into other’s life. So planners are a great way to sit back and find quality time with yourself! Some people even experience it as a form of meditation.
Paper planners equal creativity
Digital planners are more formal! Or they don’t really encourage you to be creative. The maximum you can do is have colorful columns. While paper planners inspire you to be creative as much as you want. You can draw things, shapes! Have different stickers! Here is a quick video I found recently in case you want to be artistic with your planner.
It also motivates you to plan more and get more things done! Basically makes the planning less of a chore but more of a FUN!
A good way to record your life from a micro perspective
Days, weeks, months, years! Planners are such a great way to analyze your life. In this way, you don’t really have to indulge in an expensive hard drive to record your life. It’s also more fun to see your year at a glance don’t you think?
They are less distracting.
Paper planners are free of notifications!
There isn’t anything other than our planning or goals. While digital planners mostly divert our attention to unwanted calls, emails, and notifications. Sometimes even an update of the software can take so long that you may lose the urge to plan your day.
And also you know too much screen time isn’t healthy for our brains.
So paper planners help us to stay focused, to be more attentive to what we do and to give you a break from your screen time.
IF you are ready to use the paper planner then here are a few tips that may help:
- If you are a beginner go for a minimalistic format.
You can’t really go wrong with a simple notebook. May be an inspiring quote or phrase along the top with three things to do on that day is all you need to start your productive day.
- Decide the budget:
You don’t have to buy something extra fancy to have a planner. I always love simplicity in my planners. That’s why I have been using a notebook to plan things.
Now I bought a planner to have a more organized system.

- Write only a few things:
A long to-do list can be intimidating. So limiting the to-do list to only two to three things can help us to accomplish what we really want to achieve on that particular day.
- Be more specific with your daily schedule.
Instead of saying “post 2 posts on Instagram”, say something like “Post a quote on productivity / Post about 5 productivity tips”.
What to include in your paper planner?
Where can I start…there is so much you can do with your planner. It’s your creative space! I love writing down quotes, daily challenges or my recent obsession is making beautiful doodles. I am not at all good at drawing but doodles are such a fun way to practice your drawing skills.
Here are a few more ideas that may help:
- Daily Goals or Challenges
- Brain Dump
- Seasonal Planning
- Budget planning
- Vacation Plans
- Accomplishments of the day/ weeks/ year
- Self-care ideas
- Books you would love to read/ reading
- Things you are grateful for
- Habit tracker
- Wellness goals
If you are a blogger then things like:
- Pageviews tracker
- Income tracker
- Blog expense tracker
- Affiliate sales list

And the list goes on. So I am sure there are plenty of fun ideas and planning you can include in your planner. Now comes the most important question:
